🏒 2010 Class · Club Season · 16U Tier 1 · Week 4

Week 4, 16U Tier 1: The River Rats Take It Back, and the Cut Line Closes to 0.18.

A new No. 1, a new team in the top ten, and a qualifying cushion that has shrunk by three quarters in seven days.

The Neponset Valley River Rats are back at No. 1 in Massachusetts 16U Tier 1. They sit at 94.54 to Middlesex Islanders East's 94.42 — a gap of 0.12 — and the two clubs have now traded the top spot in consecutive weeks. Nobody else at this tier has been within two points of either of them all season.

Islanders East are 19-4-1 across 24 games, more hockey than any team on any Massachusetts list at either age group. They have not dropped more than one position all fall. This is a two-club race and it is being run at a pace the rest of the tier has not matched.

How to read this table

Eight teams from this tier reach the Massachusetts state tournament, so the gold bar after eighth place is a cut line, not decoration. We publish the top ten — the eight that would qualify today and the two closest to getting there.

A team also has to play 18 games to be eligible. That is a Massachusetts Hockey requirement and it applies at every tier. A GP figure in amber means that team has not reached 18 yet.

Rating is the number that orders the list, and it is what separates eighth from ninth. MyHockeyRankings weighs who a team has played, not only what its record says, which is why ranks and records disagree all over this list.

On records. The lists publish Wednesdays and clubs post results through Tuesday, so a late score can land in a team's record before it reaches that team's rating. We print each record as it stands and never calculate how a club did over a given weekend.

A note on prep rosters. These are club teams. Prep school varsity rosters for 2026-27 have not been set — tryouts run in November and December, and the prep season starts after the club half season ends.

At the cut line: eighth sits 0.18 clear of ninth. It was 0.79 a week ago — the margin has narrowed by three quarters in seven days.

That collapse is the story beneath the top two. Central Mass Penguins still hold eighth and the last qualifying place, but a cushion that looked comfortable last week is now almost nothing, and they remain the thinnest schedule in the top ten at 13 games — five short of eligibility. They are defending a 0.18 lead over Springfield Jr Thunderbirds while also needing five more games on the calendar before November. No club on this list has less margin for error in both races at once.

Boston Hockey Academy enter the top ten at 9-9-1, pushing East Coast Wizards out. They arrive already eligible at 19 games, which is more than four of the eight clubs ranked above them can say.

Five of these ten have reached 18 games. The two that will feel the ones they are missing are the Penguins at 13 and East Coast Militia (National) at 15 — Militia sitting third, comfortably inside the cut on rating, with three games still to find.

And the strength-of-schedule case at this tier keeps getting starker rather than softer. Cape Cod Whalers are 5-10-2 and ranked fourth, five games under .500 and up a place on the week. They sit four spots above a Penguins club with a far better record. That is not an error in the list; it is the list telling you that the Whalers have played a much harder schedule. It is still the row most likely to start an argument at the rink.
