Two Massachusetts teams. Two very different situations. The Minutemen Flames are 2-0 and in the driver's seat. The Neponset Valley River Rats are 1-1 and staring at a tiebreaker math problem. Here's what's at stake on Day 3 at USA Hockey 15U Nationals in Green Bay.
Flames vs Fox Motor: Close It Out
This one is simple: win and advance. The Flames control their own destiny. At 2-0 with an OT win over LA Jr. Kings and a shootout victory over #4 Woodbridge, they've already proven they can handle pressure. Now they face a Fox Motor team from Michigan that was shut out 5-0 by Woodbridge. The Flames should be the better team on paper, and if they stay consistent and play their game, there's no reason this result should be in doubt.
That said, this is Nationals. There are no easy games, and an upset here would be devastating after the Flames fought so hard to beat Woodbridge. The message is clear: take care of business. Lee, Erickson, Sawyer, and the rest of the Flames roster have been rolling. Keep the foot on the gas and punch the ticket.
Rats vs Buffalo: Win Big or Go Home
This is where it gets complicated. The River Rats need to beat Buffalo, but a win alone may not be enough. Here's the situation:
If the Rats beat Buffalo, all three teams in the pool - Honeybaked, River Rats, and Buffalo - finish with identical 2-1 records. That triggers a three-way tiebreaker based on the USA Hockey Tournament Guidebook. Since all three teams will have played each other, the tiebreaker starts with head-to-head results.
The bottom line: the Rats need to beat Buffalo by at least two goals. A one-goal win likely sends them home due to the head-to-head goal differential math. The 5-3 loss to Honeybaked put them in a hole, and they need a convincing performance against Buffalo to dig out of it.
The good news? This is the same River Rats team that dismantled Sioux Falls 7-1 in their opener with 11 of 17 skaters on the scoresheet. The offense is there. Queally, Felt, Short, and Walsh have the firepower. Tonight they need to use it.
The Flames need a win. The Rats need a statement. Two games tonight in Green Bay that will determine how far Massachusetts goes at USA Hockey Nationals. No margin for error.
