On May 4, 20 Massachusetts 2010s were tendered or drafted in the USHL Phase I Draft. It was a historic night. Families celebrated. Group chats exploded. Twenty kids from Massachusetts prep hockey and club programs were told they belong in Tier I junior hockey.
But here's what most people don't realize: those 20 players are eligible to be drafted again.
The QMJHL Entry Draft is June 5, 2026 — 30 days away. The Q is one of three leagues in the Canadian Hockey League, and thanks to a recent CHL ruling, players drafted by QMJHL teams remain eligible for NCAA Division I hockey. The two drafts are completely independent. A player can be the property of both a USHL franchise and a QMJHL franchise at the same time — giving families more options, more leverage, and more control over the best development path for their player. For the 20 already drafted, the Q adds another Tier I option to their timeline.
And then there are the other 30.
Thirty Massachusetts prep hockey players watched the USHL Draft from the outside. Some had the credentials — the points, the All-Mass selections, the Boys Festival invites, the USA National experience. Some were building toward it. All of them now have a second chance on June 5.
Leading that group of 30 is a player who, by every measure, should have been on the USHL draft board.
Start with Alex Guo.
Top Prospect
Alex Guo
10 pts
Belmont Hill • Minutemen Flames • Defense • 2G, 8A
A 1st Team All-Mass defenseman. A USA Boys National 15 Team selection. A Boys Festival pick. A Minutemen Flames player — the same club that sent 9 players to the USHL on draft night. A Belmont Hill student at one of the top prep programs in the state. Guo has every credential a junior hockey scout looks for. The QMJHL Draft on June 5 is his next opportunity — and with the CHL's NCAA eligibility ruling in place, the Q is a real option. Beyond that, a full 2026-2027 season at Belmont Hill with the Flames behind him makes him one of the most compelling Phase II candidates in the country.

Beyond the Q: USHL Phase II — May 2027
If the QMJHL Draft doesn't pan out, the USHL Phase II Draft next May is the next opportunity. Phase II is an open draft that includes birth years 2007 through 2010 — meaning these players will be competing for spots alongside older, more experienced talent. The bar is higher, but the pathway is there for anyone who puts in the work.
Club season starts in September. Prep season opens in December. Every game, every shift, every point between now and May 2027 builds the case.
30 players. Two drafts ahead.
The QMJHL Draft is June 5 — 30 days away. The USHL Phase II Draft follows next May.
These players built their foundation during the 2025-2026 season at the club and prep level. The Q Draft is the immediate next step. For those who don't hear their name on June 5, a full year of club and prep hockey lies ahead to build the case for Phase II.
State of Hockey will be tracking every one of them.
