State of Hockey is an independent publication covering Massachusetts prep school hockey. It is written, edited, researched and published by one person: Mike Wallace. There is no staff, no parent company and no league or school affiliation behind it.

What We Cover

The site tracks two birth years of Massachusetts players — 2010s and 2011s — through the full arc of a prep hockey season and the recruiting calendar that runs alongside it:

  • NEPSAC prep school results — season statistics, leaderboards and school rankings for the December–March prep season
  • USA Hockey pipeline — Development and Regional camps, the National 15 and National 16 camps, the Boys Festival, Final 40 and the National Team Development Program
  • Junior draft coverage — USHL Phase I selections and tenders, and QMJHL draft standing
  • Player movement — transfers between prep programs and between club organizations
  • College commitments — verbal commitments, tracked as they are reported
  • Club season coverage — the September–November half season, including tournament results and rosters
  • Original articles — preseason ranking boards, commitment features and season analysis

Who Reads It

Parents, coaches, players, and scouts and recruiters working the junior and college levels. The writing assumes you know hockey but not necessarily the particular corners of the Massachusetts prep and club landscape.

Who Publishes It

Every article on this site carries the byline “By Mike Wallace.” There are no guest contributors and no anonymous posts.

Mike has followed the 2010 birth year for roughly a decade, initially as a hockey parent and youth volunteer. He coached in The Ten Cup, a summer tournament founded in 2019 at Pilgrim Rink in Hingham that is organized by hometown rather than by club program, and volunteered with Milton Youth Hockey. That vantage is the reason this site exists: it began as a way to organize what he was already tracking on a spreadsheet.

He is not a scout, a recruiter, an agent, or an advisor to any player, family, program or organization, and he does not accept payment from families for coverage or placement.
